Preview of the Next CTPC Meeting |
September 27, 2011 - 6:30 p.m. |
CTPC member Richard Frisch will present our September program which he has entitled Charles Babbage —The Man Who Invented the Computer.
Babbage tried to change the world. His story is one of genius versus bureaucracy. He was a polymath: a mathematician, philosopher, economist, and inventor. He was more than a century ahead of his times. Early in his life, he successfully led a revolt to replace Isaac Newton’s calculus at Cambridge University with that of the German mathematician Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. Babbage later was awarded the Cambridge University Lucasian Chair of Mathematics, which Newton had also held.
Babbage revolutionized mechanical computation in the early stages of England’s Industrial Revolution, inventing two calculating engines before inventing the general purpose computer.
He studied and wrote on manufacture and economics. In his pursuit of the mechanical computer he invented methods for mechanical drafting, metallurgy, metal fabrication, printing processes and much more.
It's the first in a series that Richard is working on titled, The Titans and Tyrants of Technology: from the Industrial Revolution to Today. Sounds like a really informative program.
Our meeting begins at 6:30 PM and will last until 8:30 PM. Meetings are held at the Silver Star Diner, 210 Connecticut Ave. in Norwalk ( Exit 14 on I-95) We encourage you to remain after the meeting for some socializing and to have Pizza, Salad and the refreshment of your choice at the Silver Star. Costs are normally less than $14/person. They are allowing us to use the facility at “no charge” and we think they deserve some benefit for their generosity.
